Why Your Legacy Matters: Building a Future Free from Aplastic Anaemia

Every gift in a Will to The Aplastic Anaemia Trust is a powerful act of hope - helping us provide vital support to people facing one of the most challenging and little-known bone marrow conditions.

Fiona shares how a legacy of kindness helped her family when her son was diagnosed with severe aplastic anaemia - and why she hopes others will consider leaving a gift to help others like them in the future.

Coping with a life-changing diagnosis

When Fiona’s 21-year-old son was diagnosed with severe aplastic anaemia in 2016, her family faced an incredibly difficult and uncertain time.

“Dealing with the diagnosis of a life-changing and potentially life-threatening, super-rare condition is hugely challenging and very stressful,” she says.

“The AAT provided us with prompt and direct practical, expert advice, resources and personal support at every stage of our lengthy AA journey.”

Support that goes beyond the medical

Thanks to the generosity of supporters - including those who’ve left a gift in their Will - The Aplastic Anaemia Trust has been able to support families like Fiona’s when they need it most.

“Being heard, understood and supported by a dedicated organisation like the AAT has helped us immeasurably. The positive sense of community fostered by the AAT has been crucial in coping with all the challenges that AA brings.”

Gifts in Wills help fund expert advice, research into better treatments, practical resources for families, and a close-knit community of people who truly understand what life with aplastic anaemia is like.

“The AAT, as the only UK-based charity supporting the AA community, plays a uniquely important role. They’ve been hugely successful in creating an involved and supportive community, offering peer-to-peer support as well as clinical knowledge and educational resources. It’s a true partnership that achieves incredible results.”

Hope for the future - powered by legacy gifts

Legacy gifts also help fuel future breakthroughs - from clinical trials to finding the cause and ultimately, a cure.

“Treatment prognosis and outcomes have improved tremendously in the past 20-30 years. I’d like to see this continue through further commitment to research and trials. But this will only happen with continuing support and funds being available to invest in research.”
